A walking tour of the Stavely Research Ranch – September 2024
Situated in the Porcupine Hills west of Stavely, Alberta, the Staveley Research Station is a unique and valuable demonstration of long-term effects of land management on grassland ecosystems in Alberta. Join Barry Adams, Rangeland Management Specialist – retired from Alberta Environment and Parks, for this day long, outdoor walk. Topics will include:
The ecological context of the Foothills Parkland
An introduction to the research of Dr. John Dormaar and Dr. Walter Willms
The role of grasses in building soils and storing carbon
The role of Stavely in the development of the Alberta Range Health Assessment
Review of grazing history, plant community information and range health scoring
The role of range health in the capture and storage of water in the watershed.
Please bring your own lunch. Lunch will not be provided, and the site is way up in the spectacular Porcupine Hills. Once we leave the vehicles, we won’t be back until we leave the site so carry your lunch, fluids, cameras, and any extra clothes.

How to Use the Range Plant Community Guides and Recovery Strategies
Unfortunately with a number of late cancellations for the Range Plant Community Guides & Recovery Strategies Workshop scheduled for September 13th, 2023 we’ve had to make the tough decision to cancel the workshop for this fall due to insufficient registrations for a cost recovery event. We will be offering the same workshop in conjunction with the CLRA Conference in March 2024. The GRF Mailing list will receive notice/announcements about the event as details become available.
We are still proceeding as planned with the Grassland Assessment Classroom & Hands on Field Training on September 14th at the Cassils Hall/Antelope Creek Ranch.
Apologies for any inconvenience and appreciate your understanding.
