GRF Winter Webinar III – Reclaiming High Elevation Grasslands in Post Coal Mining Landscapes in the Elk Valley
Early insights and future research directions by Natalie Shelby-James, Sr. Lead Land Research & Kate Walsh Vegetation Lead, Teck Coal Limited.
High elevation grasslands (HEGs) are ecologically and culturally important ecosystems in the Elk Valley of British Columbia (BC). Teck’s vision is to reclaim HEGs that are self-sustaining, provide important ecosystem functions for valued components such as bighorn sheep and the broader landscape, and reflect Ktunaxa cultural values. In this presentation, we will share Teck’s current reclamation practices and early insights from trials and monitoring program. Our goal is to bring broader awareness and share learnings from our work to contribute to GRF’s established community of practice.
